On 3:00pm ET on Thursday, US Soccer announced two more players that will be attending the team’s training camp in Austin, Texas from January 19-28. As discussed in the review of the 25-player roster that released yesterday, Catarina Macario was originally included in the squad, but was denied release by her club team, Olympique Lyon. US Soccer confirmed today that defender Imani Dorsey has been ruled of this camp due to an injury. Head coach Vlatko Andonovski has called in midfielder Morgan Gautrat and forward Morgan Weaver as the two replacement players.
Morgan Gautrat (née Brian) is no stranger to the USWNT, having been a part of both the 2015 and 2019 Women’s World Cup winning squads. She receives her first call up since being called in to a training camp that was held back in October of 2020 in Denver, Colorado. She will look to make an impact at this camp, as she has been out of the USWNT picture for quite some time, falling down on the pecking order of central midfielders since Andonovski was appointed head coach back in November of 2019. Currently with 87 caps, Gautrat will look to bring her strong 2021 NWSL play into the national team setting. In 2021, she was rated as the #1 player in the entire NWSL by FotMob, putting up some impressive stats including finishing second in the league in duels won with 177 (only behind Trinity Rodman who won 189). She was an integral part of the Chicago Red Stars side that made it all the way to the NWSL Championship, playing 2,107 minutes across 24 matches.
Forward Morgan Weaver joins the team after recently being a part of the squad last November that traveled to Australia for two friendly matches, in which she received her fist two international caps. Andonovski has been vocal about wanting to use these camps in early 2022 to evaluate a younger group of players, and she is undoubtably part of the group. In the NWSL, we have seen glimpses of what Weaver is capable of with her club team Portland Thorns. She has scored three big goals in big moments in her short time in the league: an important goal to upset the North Carolina Courage in the knockout rounds of the 2020 Challenge Cup, the winning penalty kick in a penalty shootout for the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup to give the Portland Thorns the trophy, and a late game winner in the 2021 International Women’s Champions Cup final to defeat Olympique Lyon. She will look to impress at this January camp.
With the additions of Gautrat and Weaver and the removal of Dorsey, the USWNT’s 2022 January Camp squad is now comprised of 26 players. Below is the complete and updated list:
